Fourth of July 2012

I have vacation time to work through this summer. I also have voluntary staff lounge duty. And I also need to work out how DeployStudio works because I have a lot of Macs to update.

I have installed Fedora 17 on my home server. It seems to work fine, as I finally got my database up and running. I will use the time to update our card catalog kiosks at work to Fedora 17 this summer.

My town has its fireworks on the evening of the third of July, so that they do not conflict with other holiday fireworks. It was a good show this year, with smiley faces in the fireworks (at odd angles). Adding to the entertainment was a red full moon on the horizon, and someone's floating paper lantern passing through where the fireworks were exploding.

The weather has been very hot and dry during the past week, if you do not count the whip storm that passed by last week. I was finally forced to pull out the tall air conditioner and set it up in the living room. It is a bear to set up because I have to route the heat exhaust and the water exhaust out a front window.

As a whack ending to my Fourth of July, as I was typing this my doorbell rang. It was my sister the editor, who wanted me to follow her down the street with a bucket full of water. Someone left their fireworks in a can on the side of the road, and it was still burning. I dumped the bucket of water on it … just as the folks in the house came out. They were okay with it, though. I'm glad of that, because I felt like C.S. Lewis did when he was compelled to keep watch near a mentally ill woman's home … with a woman who was even more whacko!
