The Futility of the Presidential Election
I have written this a while back, but I figure it is time to post it on my blog.
We now have the choice between two candidates for President of the United States of America this fall.
- Mr. Bain Capital, who closed a paper plant in Marion rather than give in to the legitimate grievances of its striking workers, then sucked the life out of the company that owned the plant.
- Mr. Chicago Politics, complete with the secret backroom deals and the arm-twisting and the slander of his opponents, who is an Ivy-League educated John Maynard Keynes wrapped in a black skin.
Also, both are sworn enemies of the Internet.
- Mr. Bain hates the Internet because it functions well under the principle of network neutrality, of which he is under the false belief (no doubt whispered into his ear by AT&T and Verizon) that it is some sort of a government plot;
- Mr. Chicago is addicted to his servile support of Big Entertainment and its arrogant belief that the Internet's only purpose is to rob it of the money it deserves and to destroy its venerable but inefficient business models.
These two are so repellent and so alien, each in their own way, from the rest of the American people, that it is a surprise if anyone bothers to show up at the ballot box this coming November.
As for myself, I cannot bring myself to vote for Mr. Bain; but at least I can admit that the Republicans did not permit a zombie to run for President this time, or submit itself to recruiting a crank or an amoral freak for the vice-president job. But I will not vote for Mr. Chicago again; his losing policies and abuses of power, adopted from his time in Chicago, make him as much a threat to freedom as his predecessor, because of both of which the United States can no longer claim to be free.
It looks like I will have to vote Libertarian, no matter how naive it is. But at least I will vote. Remember, folks, the only vote that is wasted is the vote that is never cast.
