Phuzzy Book Is Here

30 October 2013

At long last, after a wait of many months after her Kickstarter project ended, I now hold my copy of The Phuzzy Book, the printed form of the web comic by Monica Ray, in my hands. It came in the mail last Tuesday. Her long struggle with the CYMK was worth it, because the strips in the book are very colorful and pleasing to look at and read. The comic series is almost complete (the MVPs, the trip to Honduras and the travails of Anton, among others, did not make it), and there are no explanations for the strips. (Let's face it, the comments are often as funny as the strip.) But those do not detract from the beauty of the finished work.

about monica ray

Allow me, if I may, to quote from some place that allowed Ms. Ray in for the summer.

I am tiny graphic designer currently thriving in Chicago. I'm studying at DePaul University in Advertising, Graphic Design, and Psychology. I draw a lot and I don't like sweets for some reason (this includes cake, cupcakes, and pastries loaded with jam). One of the main reasons I want to be in Graphic Design is to add artwork to a field that many people deem invasive and unethical. That, and I hear graphic designers get to dress casual all the time.

Having bravely survived her parents' miscalculations of her talents (omg, the economy!) and the existence of her younger brother (who fervently believes her to be a goblin), Ms. Ray has graduated from DePaul in 2012. Shortly thereafter Ms. Ray participated on the Penny Arcade Web series Strip Search, where well into the series she counter-ragged Mr. Krahulik with her tongue of flame during an elimination match (where she drew about her parents' miscalculations of her talents).

Ms. Ray now lives in Seattle, ceding the artistic domination of Chicago over to her bestest bud, Yuj Lee.

update

Ms. Ray has since moved to Los Angeles, where she is a storyboard artist for Nickelodeon.
