Deeper into Autumn

It has been awhile. I am only getting around to typing after having to pull myself away from Minecraft. What pulled me away are a combo of two things.

the car is mine

I reached the point this month where I could pay the reminder of my car loan in full. I have done so. Then I had to pay fifteen dollars (after finding an open license branch) to lift the lien off my car. With the title in my hands, I can say my car is truly mine.

Since it is my savings account that contributed to the paying off of my car loan, what I paid in loan installments will go into my savings account for at least six months to build up the savings again.

leaves … so many leaves

The other thing is the maple tree, which is now droping leaves onto my yard like nobody's business. I worked for two hours on Saturday evening in the drizzly twilight to rake them all onto the side of the street for the town leaf vacuum to pick them up. Then I worked for an hour this evening to add to the pile.

During this month's meeting of the Friends of the Fairmount Public Library, we had to face the fact that, while we are doing well with funding, we are starved for members. We are now down to its original members (plus one). Everyone else has either moved out of Fairmount or has fallen away. The Friends have done good for the library during its ten years (so far) of struggle to serve the town in the face of area poverty and political stinginess. But it is looking like the Friends will have to dissolve as an organization, even though its members will continue to volunteer their time to the library in their own way.

The mention of the possible demise of the Friends came near the end of the board of trustees meeting. The result was a torrent of babble. But the gist is that, if we close down the Friends, we can no longer register with the State as a corporation, since there will be no more officers or directors.

Of course, none of this would happen if more parents of children and more concerned citizens (not Jack Shields) would come to the Friends' meeting and give one or two hours of their time a month for help their local library.
