Hephæstus

This level offers a mini-tragedy as the more level-headed people in the Hephæstus level below Ryan's office sought to kill Ryan — or make capital out of the seekers — and ended up dying ugly deaths.

Stanley Kyburz

An engineer from Australia who ran the Hephæstus workshops. Aiming to kill Ryan, Kyburz dreamed up a scheme to breach the magnetic locks on Ryan's office door with an electromagnetic pulse bomb of his own design. Kyburz was killed when Ryan learned what he was doing. But Ryan foolishly left the bomb casing and components lying about, so Jack can still gather the parts, build the bomb, and detonate it.

Anya Andersdotter

A designer of women's shoes who lost a daughter to the Little Sisters project and who finally became outraged by Ryan's abandonment of his own values as the city collapsed in civil war. Intending to kill Ryan, Anya slept with the maintenance workers in Hephæstus to learn how to reach him. This led her to Kyburz; Kyburz, fearing she was an agent provocateur, turned her over to Ryan's splicers and certain death.

Pablo Navarro

A maintenance worker employed by Kyburz in the Hephæstus shops, Navarro is more than happy to milk any situation for all its worth. Once Navarro got Kyburz drunk, learned the lock code to Kyburz's office, and helped himself to some of Kyburz's money. He also helped himself to Anya in exchange for directions to Kyburz's office.

Navarro's opportunism was exceeded only by his professionalism, which in turn may have been his undoing: Tired of Navarro's complaints about their shoddy maintenance of the Big Daddies, his co-workers turned on him.
