A U-Invent, also called a crafting station, is a vending machine where you manufacture your own gene tonics, ammunition, and other goodies. U-Invents appear starting in Arcadia, and are a common sight in that and subsequent levels.
U-Invents take the various components you need to invent stuff. Those components are found on aggressors, on Big Daddies and in containers throughout the levels where the U-Invents are located. These components are:

U-Invents take money only during the process of hacking them to reduce the number of components required.
Special components include chlorophyll solution, which are crafted with (bee spit) enzyme samples and distilled water to create the Lazarus Vector in Arcadia.
Other components do not require U-Invents for crafting. These are the RJ-34 switches, nitroglycerine and ionic gel to build the EMP bomb in Hephæstus; and the various suit parts and pheremones to make the player into a Big Daddy in Point Prometheus.
There are gene tonics associated with crafting. Clever Inventor reduces the number of components you need to craft an item (although it is never less then one). Prolific Inventor gives you twice the number items for the same components.
