You can control the speed of your city simulation.
There are four simulation speeds: Pause, turtle, rhino and cheetah. Use pause to make major changes without tripping over your sims. Use cheetah to rip through a year in a few seconds. Otherwise, use rhino speed.
Disasters have their own speed, which suspends the simulation for you to find the disaster and (for fires and riots) send people to deal with it.
