Apollo Square

concentration camp

When the proles became restless and agitated, Ryan turned their quarter into a concentration camp. Order broke down quickly from the war and from plasmid abuse. The quarter is now even more of a ruin than Olympus Heights.

This level continues the tale of Diane McClintock, who visits Apollo Square to tell off the rebels, only to be won over to Atlas' cause.

There are three sections in this level: Apollo Square proper, Artemis Suites and Hestia Suites. The latter two are connected to Apollo Square by tram lines. Hestia Suites is also where the metro station is located.

The first part of your visit is hampered by your current loss of control of your plasmids. Unless a useful plasmid appears, you may have to fight with weapons only. And don't even think of approaching the metro station until you are cured; Fontaine still has a leash on your brain to keep you back.

apollo square

You enter the prison, whose gate is no longer guarded. Walking the tram line, and defeating the Big Daddy after some aggressors softened him up, takes you to Apollo Square. The square is dominated by a gallows from which several people have been hung over a banner that reads GENE TRAITOR. There are at least two roving nitro splicers. The entrance to Artemis Suites is to your left. On the far end is the Hestia Suites exit. The right has a Gatherers Garden vendor; you cannot operate it until you find the second dose of Lot 192.

artemis suites

Artemis Suites has many tiers, of which only the first three tiers are accessible. Each tier has a single flat.

ground tier

The flat is home to a sneaky nitro splicer and a gun turret guarding a lot of explosives and the only showers in the game. The other end of the flat has a crafting station.

second tier

Suchong's Free Clinic is here. After rigging or destroying the security, you will find the second dose of Lot 192. You will also find Suchong himself, embedded into his examining table with the mining drill of a Big Daddy, who killed him for slapping a Little Sister in anger.

After you drink the second dose of Lot 192, your control of your plasmids is secure. Tennenbaum radios to you:

Now you are having freedom. Suchong's drugs should have no hold on you. Take the bathysphere to Point Prometheus. It is time for this matter to be settled.

third tier

This flat is likely that of the photographer whose corpse you found at the Mercury Suites third tier. This place is loaded with cameras and film. Rig the grenade turret to take out the splicers inside.

which way to go?

After you leave Artemis, return to Apollo Square, clear out any remaining splicers and visit the Gatherers Garden. With the taking out of another Big Daddy and (if you have been a good player) another gift from Dr. Tennenbaum, you should have plenty of Adam by now.

Next, enter the Hestia Suites entrance and rig the camera. Now, go to the metro station. As you approach the metro entrance, you are treated to a hallucination. A man calls out to the crowd from on top of the newsstand:

Do you think Ryan's going to help you when you're down and out? No! Fontaine! Fontaine's the man with the helping hand!

You have a choice here: Enter the metro station and proceed to Point Prometheus, or keep going forward to the Hestia Suites. As you approach the Hestia gate, Fontaine says:

Made Ryan good and mad when I started playing the charity angle. Fontaine's Home for the Poor. 'Fore I knew it, I was calling myself Atlas and leading an army.

And all he had to do was to make the chumps believe they're worth a nickle.

Hestia Suites has five tiers, all accessible. Some of the flats in them are directly accessible. Others you must enter another flat to reach them.

ground tier

There are a couple of vendors, but no entrances.

second/third tiers

This is Fontaine's Home for the Poor. This has two floors, on the second and third. There is a boiler room at ground level, but it is accessible only from the second floor.

fourth/fifth tiers

Atlas/Fontaine set up his headquarters here. The entrance is on the fifth tier.

There is a boarded-up door opposite from the entrance to Atlas' lair. The boards can be busted with your wrench to let you into a room with goodies. There is a room with more stuff underneath that; but before you jump down the hole into that floor, pop a grenade down there to kill or soften up the aggressor lying in wait. When you are done, crawl out the window and prepare for a long drop.

Inside Atlas' HQ are printing presses where all those Who Is Atlas? posters were cranked out. There is a picture of Ryan used as a dart board; steel and fire bolts remain for the taking. There is also a weapons cache; you will need Telekinesis to grab the weapons and ammo, as the door is blocked by a broken beam. Watch out for the two splicers guarding the place, and for the security camera over the stairs to the fourth floor.

On the fourth floor is Atlas' office. On one of desks is the broken body of Diane McClintock. She barged in with news of a raid just as Fontaine (evidently not wearing his disguise) was recording this:

Fontaine: Never play a man for the short con when you can play 'em for the long one. Atlas is the longest con of all. Ryan wanted Frank Fontaine dead; I just gave him what he wanted. As Atlas, I got a new face, a clean record, and a fresh start. Now it's time to take back Rapture and —

Diane McClintock: … Ryan did. I can't wait to tell Atlas. He'll be so pleased.

Fontaine (voice of Atlas): Uhh, Miss McClintock … what are you doing here? Let me just (voice of Fontaine) turn this off!

There is a hugh hole next to the desks. Jump down into the third tier, and exit from the poorhouse.

metro station

The metro station has an elevator that takes you down to the bathysphere lobby. Fontaine is less than pleased that you have broken his control over you, and offers you a bribe to get off his back.

You have a choice on where to go next. You can go straight to the Point to take on Fontaine. Or, now that you have the muse key off of Sander Cohen, you can travel to Fort Frolic first to see what lies inside the box of his most private muse.
